Hi,
I have a portrait with a lot of noise in the blue channel. If I replace the blue channel with the green channel there is an overall improvement but it introduces other problems. Does anyone have suggestions for how to deal with a very noisy blue channel?

If you want you can see the preview here:

You need a noise reduction plug-in. You then apply it either to all channels or to the blue channel. Something like Noise Ninja or Neat Image.

Are the Neat Image, Noise Ninja, etc. plug-ins really that much better than the PS CS2 ‘Reduce Noise’ filter?
Even with a plug-in am I better off using the Channel Mixer to recreate a blue channel before I run noise reduction software?

Thanks,
Ron

Does it help if you blur the blue channel?

Ron,

Try the following:

Before doing any tonal editing of the image, convert the image to LAB mode. Make certain you’re viewing at 100% actual pixel size. Enter the A Channel and apply a small (about 3 or 4) Gaussian blur to eliminate the noise in that channel. Then do the same in the B Channel. Return the mode to RGB and see if that helped.

Only you can answer that! I believe both p-i’s have trial versions.

I think that the answer is yes far simpler to use.

Having to address the same issue when I shot a product on a blue background the "grain/noise" was a big problem which Ninja fixed easily.

I had also shot the same thing on a white background without the noise being apparent.

Hi Andrew,
It does help, I decided to use median rather than Gaussian to do the blur.

Hi Herb,
I tried the edit you suggested but it made had very little effect. I think this photo may be too far gone for such a subtle edit.

Thanks,
Ron
