If the "non-used" pixels are all the same color, you can use your magic wand tool to select them and then press delete. Just make sure that the layer isn’t called "Background" (locked). If it is, just double-click on it in the layers palette to "make a layer."

I see — *delete* can make parts transparent. That answers my question. Thanks.
