making jpegs, border transparent for web

Heres my problem, i have a body background as a .gif.Then i have two buttons as jpgs. The buttons have a white border around them. I need to make the white part transparent.I have been playing around with making the buttons gif… Heres what im talking about <http://www.radicalcyborgs.com/whatshot1.html>

JPEG does not support transparency. Use GIF.

Don’s advice is sound, but sometimes people get the effect of transparency by simply using the same colour as the Web page background.

To be clear: this is a limitation of the JPEG format, not of PS.
