I’m in the process of purchasing a graphics tablet to use with PS. I’ve come across hundreds of brands and models.

I’m a hobby PS user and just for photo touch up and restoration.

What brands are of the better quality(not looking to spend a fortune)?

I imagine that 4×5 would be a little small , but I don’t think 8×12 is really needed either. What would be a good size for my needs?

Does anyone know of a retailer that carries these items in stock?(rather go pick it up than order and ship)

Thanks for any help

Bob

Wacom. Durable, and excellent driver support.

The larger tablets are for people used to working on paper. Trained graphic artists use large sweeping motions while drawing that require the bigger tablet. Scribblers like myself are happy with the 4×5 size, which costs less and saves desk space.

I haven’t seen them in stores. Maybe someone else will chime in on that one.

As an extension to that question, when does one generally make the break from mouse to table? In other words, what level work generally justifies it? I have mild-moderate carpel-tunnel syndrome, so I’m considering it.

well if you get relief from the wrist strain it will be well worth the price,
you can’t buy another wrist or go exchange it for another model.

I bought my Wacom at CompUSA. The OP has not listed his location, but a list of retailers for Wacom is available at:

http://www.wacom.com/wheretobuy/retail.cfm

There may be chain stores on that list that don’t stock Wacom at every location. I didn’t see them here, for example, at Circuit City.

I bought a 6"x8" Wacom Graphire 3 for about $100 from B&H Video. It is worth every penny.

I used a small one when I had wrist problems once, it really helped the wrist. It was funny I ended up using both mouse in the right hand and tablet in the left hand together! Keyed shortcuts with thumbs & pinkies <g>.
