I have photoshop 7 with windows XP. I’m trying to map text to a t-shirt so the text follows the wrinkles in the fabric.
Every time I try to use the distort and displacement filter it looks like I spilled a bottle of ink on the skirt.
Can anyone help me?

Take a copy of your document–open up your channels palette and see which channel gives you dark information around the folds of the shirt
Copy the channel into a new document Control + A, Control + C File>Open>New.

Use the dodge and burn tool to darken the shadows of the folds to 0 black and the highlight edges to 255 white. Leave a few areas of 128-133 grey where you want pixels to be left alone.

Displacement works on:

1. Blacks-moves displaced image up and to the left by 2 pixels
2. Whites-moves displaced image down and to the right by 2 pixels
3. Greys (especially midgreys) leaves pixels unchanged.
