For many of the effects you can set a blending mode just like you can with a regular layer. You do this in the layer effects dialog box. This only controls the effect. You may need to also adjust the one for the layer as well.

not 100% sure on what youre taling about, but thats not you, thats me
being

i could suggest that you merge the color overlay with the layer below, making the effect permanent, then you could play with the layers below it?

Yep – that works … I created a new, transparent layer below the original and merged down, which had the effect of ‘flattening’ the effects layers. Thanks!
