Problems with selecting a path

I’m trying to make an action to sign my photos – using Russell Brown’s "Watermark Brand Action". I already have one action that works – it has one of my business names in the path. I’m trying to edit this action and use a different path so that I can have a different signature without this business name.

I’ve duplicated the action, deleted the step that inserts the path, copied my path from illustrator to a sample document (for making the action) and I’m trying to do the step where you option-click on the path "layer" in the path’s tab. My path is of text, some of the text has internal elements (inside of a letter D, inside of the copyright mark, inside of the number 0), but when I select it I only get the outside edges.

I have been fighting with this for HOURS. I can’t figure out why it is only selecting the outside edges.

One way to do it would be to

A. add another layer,

B. hide any that have components of the image other then the (soon to be) imported path

C. Then do a select-all or whatever you need to do what you want to do to that Illustrator path.

D. Once it’s done, display the others, flatten the image, save it as a copy, and then close (the original) without saving changes.

That should work. Although our friend Russell is wayyyyyy more entertaining and knowledgable than we here in Tampa will ever be.
