tif transparentcy

How do I access the transparency of a TIF file? When I open a tif file from another application it comes in with a transparency. I have some problems when I try to manipulate the file or change it’s format to say PNG. It comes into PS as transparent. It does not show an alpha channel, or a path. It does not have a layer mask. Is there a way to access what I would call the alpha channel. I know it as a RGBA file (Red, Green, Blue, Alpha)

This problem has come up many times and I have always found a way to do what I needed. I want to find a better way to just open the alpha channel.

Photoshop opens such images as transparent layers. You can not directly edit the transparency, and even if you could, there wouldn’t be any image data there.

Please describe in detail what you are trying to accomplish, and maybe we can help.
