Cloning Stamp Quit

Here is one more question regarding the cloning stamp tool. I have been successfully using the cloning stamp for quite awhile-until today. When I attempt to establish my own pattern (by selecting the area to be cloned within a marque rectangle) the "establish a pattern" button is greyed out.

Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

I am using a Max OS X and photoshop elements-not version 2.

Well, it’s working again. Don’t know what happened to make it quit or to restart, but I’m happy to be back in the cloning business!
