The file is probably getting dropped into the Photoshop application "package". Open the Photoshop package to find the files. (Control click > show package contents).
It’s a problem most likely do the application package format.
Navigate to the application. Control-click and hold on it. Choose "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu The application will open like a folder. In that folder you may see your lost file. You’ll also see an alias of Photoshop. Hold down the option key and drag that alias to your desktop. Close the application folder window. Control-click and hold on the application again choose "Hide Package Contents" from the contextual menu. Now, use the Alias on your desktop for your alias needs.

Its been awhile since that question was asked. when PS7 was first released that was asked by someone almost every day. I was under the impression that it was added to the FAQs. I just looked and I don’t see it.
