Hi
I am using the History Brush tool and the Art History Brush tool to modify original photos. I use layers for different effects and save the work in progress as a psd file. When I want to resume working on it, the history (the original image that the tools restore) is no longer there. I’ve tried a simpler case such as using a filter (find edges) and begin painting with the History Brush tool, saving partial completion as jpg and when I reload the file, the original is gone.

Is there any way I can preserve the original until the piece is finished??

Thanks

History states are volatile and are therefore not saved with the file. – You’d soon fill up your hard disk if they were!

There is a work-around though. Make a new layer at each stage you feel you might need to return to. You can ‘paint’ from underlying layers using the clone tool set to ‘use all layers’.

It requires a slight change in the way of working to achieve the same result, with the benefit of being able to save these various "history states" in the form of layers representing the various stages of your edit.

Hope this is of some help.

Chris.
