I have an image that is odd shaped and I need to crop it and set the background to transparent. The person I am sending the image to has indicated that the image needs an alpha channel and I cannot figure out what that is.

An Alpha Channel is a saved selection. In full Photoshop there is a channels palette to mangage these (among other things). In Elements if you make a selection and go to the Select menu and save it, it is actually saved as an Alpha Channel that a owner of full Photoshop can use.

So in short the answer is yes.
