I’m about to purchase a Canon 100 mm 2.8 macro lens. Does anyone know if a ring light is a necessity??

Certainly not! a necessity.
One reason to go for the more expensive 100mm over a 50mm macro is the ‘working distance’ which allows easier lighting for the front-side (rather than side).

Like many things- depends on what you do. And how portable you need to be. I have the lens and the ring light (for film camera). It served me very well. Latest cameras don’t support the ring light, you need to buy a NEW one. That makes the expense for a ring light overly expensive imho, unless you use it All the time, rather than casually.
I would consider the ring light only if you have a Canon digital camera less than 18 months old.
