ctrl+click layer to select layer content not working?

Just started using CS2. I am used to being able to ctrl+click on any layer and have the content of that layer become a selection. I think it is working, but it is just not displaying t5h emarching ants. I went into View > Show and "Selection Edges" is grayed out. Can anyone tell me how I can select layer content and see that it is selected??!!!!
