Photo shop 6 lock up

I have changed computers and windows version to XP from 2000. I reload photoshop 6 and now I can not import a PDF file with out my computer locking up, just as the rasster scale shows up. Also if I start to use the curver scale to adjust the color of a picture. It then locks up again.
What have I done wrong??
