I have the Canon I9900, and I also have had a profile made for this printer. I need to print a grayscale imnage and want to know if it best to send my image grayscale and print with just the black ink, or to convert to rgb then print?

Print the RGB file
you will also get a smoother look, at least I know this to be the case with Epsons.

You should be able to print straight to the printer from your grayscale file using your RGB profile with Peceptual. Are the results of this not good?
