Soz folks…….but yes another newbie has a
question……………………….

I’ve a great picture of a lamp……not just any old lamp but one of those that emits what looks like forks of lightening from a samll dome in the centre to the outside of the lamp glass sphere when you touch it.

Now what i’d like to do is use this picture and then try and "overlay" for the want of a better word………a face over the top of it..

I’ve bought a couple of books for Photoshop 7 but I cant find anything….probably due to me not knwing what im looking for…

Anyone got any clues….

Thanks

Dave 🙂

Plasma.

Here are two ways: you could copy the face and paste into the lamp image and play around with the face’s layers blending modes and opacity (let the lamp show through) and even wrap it to the shape of the lamp with the transform tool.
Another method would be use a layer mask, see
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/collage/collage.htm

It is aways a help if you do because you will know when you find it 😉 Save your money on books, try Google search for "photoshop tutorials+ (whatever technique your are looking for)" a good one to start with would be "combining images".

I can’t tell you how many times I use layer masks. You can use a black/white gradient to make a even fade also. And if you make a layer mask on a layer WHILE having a selection on part of that layer.. it’ll ‘erase’ all of the unselected parts. You can really have a blast with the layer mask. It’s really useful for making oddball shapes such as for your lamp.

It would help if you posted a link to the lamp image you are talking about too

DB,

You’re welcome. It can be very intimidating at first but it will get easier with practice, if you want to swim you have to get wet.;-) If this is one of your first attempts, layer masking may seem a little ambitious but this technique forms the basis of a huge amount of imagery effects and is better learned sooner that later. Don’t forget Google is an enormous resource for tutorials and a good site worth a bookmark is
http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials/Adobe_Photoshop/Photo_Ed iting/ with over 7500 tutorials for all abilities. (a good search facility as well)

I’m not a professional designer but here are a couple examples of how I’ve used layer masking

http://drewclayton.com/sud.jpg (used layer masks on the eyes, the small shapes behind the eyes as well as the ‘rays’ coming from the central point)

http://drewclayton.com/lonely.jpg

in the second one, I masked out the 2 people and simple did a layer selection and stroked it 1 pixel I think.. did deleted the orginal so all I was left with was the outline.

It’s all about experimenting

Mike, I visited and bookmarked this excellent site……..it looks easier to use than the books i’ve bought.

As you say…..it might take a bit of practise but eventually it will get easier.

Many Thanks

I’ve just tried it again and they all work fine……

Right,,,,,im off to download more examples as they are much easier to understand than the book.

Cheers
