Help a senior with PS 5.5, please!

I have an older ver. 5.5 and have a problem.

When I click on eraser, I get pencil drawing lines instead of erasing.

History says it’s erasing, Brush palette shows erasing size spots

But it’s drawing lines.

…………………………………………………… ………………………….

When I click on pencil, I get erasing instead of drawing lines.

History shows pencil, Brush palette is pencil pallette.

But it’s erasing!

Damm it’s confusing.

Can anyone help steer me to a web with answers? Much appreciated.

Sounds like you have your colors set backwards. Assuming you want to erase black from a white background you would want colors set to black foreground and white background. But I’m sure you already know that. Just trying to help.
