Here’s a suggestion that, I think Pierre posted way back, that can offer a sometimes pleasing result. As one of the other posters already mentioned every image is different.
Open an 8 bit image>Dupicate Layer>Set Blending Mode to Color Dodge>Invert (Cmd-I) the layer will go completley white>Adjust with Gausian Blur Filter to desired effect.
Don’t expect it to look exactly like an artists’ freehand sketch but you may like the effect.
