How to superimpose a photo onto text?

Sorry I didn’t explain myself very well…I wanted the photo to show through the text block, as if the text had been "painted" with the photo.

A clipping mask (or more precisely–a clipping group) was exactly what I needed. Once I found that term in the manual, then I had no problem.

Terminology depends on the version of Photoshop.
