Saving in PSD format

okay, so now I have an original image in the workspace. I don’t want to work on that image, I am going to save it as a TIFF or PSD file format. So far so good! Now which one do I do my work on? If its the "PSD" I still have to at one point send it as a jpeg so haven’t I defeated the purpose?

I am not a novice or "newbie" but this aspect of saving files has me a bit confused.
