Photo Elements II- Mac 9.22-Conflict with HP 4550 print driver

Photoshop Elements II running on imacs with 9.22 print garbled characters to HP 4550n (with the latest driver)- if you try to print an Elements file you just get pages of control characters. You can save the project as a jpg and it will print fine. You can also print a saved project.

It appears to be a conflict with the latest HP driver for the 4550n. Any work arounds?
