Selecting Multiple Layers

I’m currently using CS1 photoshop and I’m having problems selecting more then one layers in the layer palette. It only select one no matter what keys I press with my mouse click.

In CS1 you have to "link" layers. Target one layer, then click in the box right of the layer visibility icon of other layers to link them. You’ll see a little chain-link icon appear.
In CS2, you just Cmd or Shift click to select various layers. It’s much nicer.
