selecting multiple incontinguous layers

Every book and help I have read says that in order to select multiple incontinguous layers you control click in windows. When I do it selects the entire image not highlight for multiple selections. I have reviewed my "keys" in layers and there is nothing that addresses this. I know this seems like a minor issue but when you have 2 gigs of workflow it is the simple things that are timely. Thanks for any suggestions on getting this thing fixed.

Ctrl+click the name of the layer, not the icon.
