Just went through same thing – almost identical symptoms. Mine was also a dying hard drive. I also tried to resuscitate it with Disk Warrior, Tech Tool, Mac install disks, etc, long past any reasonable point. Hope you caught on sooner than I did. New hd wasn’t too expensive. (Interesting moment: got to the grey startup screen at some point, with the apple logo; then the screen fluttered, and the apple became – a colorful little pixelated square! Chilling. It was then that I realized the terrible truth.)

Try the procedure at the following link. John Levine (from these forums) has used it to satisfactory effect as well.

There’s no guarantee that it’ll work, but if you’re lucky it might allow you enough time to back up everything off the bad drive and onto a new one.

How?

Put the hard drive in a ZipLock bag, then into the freezer.
