Need to make alpha layer my photo

Hi All, Somehow I created an alpha layer for a photo that I wanted to make Black and White. It is perfect and I cannot figure out how to save it in this form. Every time I save it,. it is still in color. Can someone please give me advice as to how I may do this>?
