Screen Pixels vs Image Proportions.

I was messing with the screen resolution and noticed that the only pixel ratio that gave a correct image ratio is where the pixel ratio is 1.333 such as 1280×960, or 1152×864. 1280×1024 will show a square whose width on screen as 10.5" by about 9.5" high.

Why is that?

Hi Lawrence,
You can correct the display for the other resolutions by selecting a matching pixel dimension from the menu. Image>Pixel Aspect Ratio.

Because 1:1.333 are the proportions of the dimensions of your screen?

Duh!

More to the point. 4:3 is what I stretch and squeeze the raster to fit when I change screen proportions. So I am screwing with what the monitor is trying to accomplish.

You should always have the screen resolution set to the 4:3 ratio; if you must use some other ratio, set your video driver not to stretch the display to the edge of the screen and use a "letterboxing"-like option to ensure the aspect ratio remains correct.
