Fill with color image within layer styles?

Can layer styles fill with a color image? I see where a "pattern" can be used, but PS asks for .pat files when I try to browse to something (like a bmp maybe).

And I can’t seem to save something (like a bmp) as a .pat file. Actually, all the .pat files look like 256 color at best.

I suggest you search for "defining patterns" in the help file
