Michel,

CS only supports ACR 2.x, you need CS2 to support ACR 3.x, is that what you have? ACR 3.x has a depth selection in the lower left corner where you can select 8 or 16 bit.

Is it possible that you have the NEF plugin installed in photoshop? The Nikon software will install it and not tell you. If so, it will be used instead of ACR and the NEF plugin only brings in images in 8 bit. Remove it to use ACR.

Ok, my post was not clear. I do use CS2.

The problem was indeed with the ubiquitous nef plugin. Thanks.
