Canon’s description of their mtf charts doesn’t tally with the diagrams.

They say that they show lenses at wide open and f8, however there are four pairs of lines not two on each chart.
Are they actually showing four apertures?

Hopefully someone here can answer this.

Blue: f8
Black: Wide Open

Thick: 10 LP/mm (contrast)
Thin: 30 LP/mm (resolving power)

Solid: Meridonial
Dashed: Sagittal

All a bit confusing, I must say. Here’s an alternate explanation:

Hi Leen,

Sure. The Canon lenses you’ll find at the first link below, choose a type of lens, then a particular lens and down at the bottom of the window you’ll find both ‘mtf chart’ and ‘how to interpret’ buttons.

Canon’s figures correlate very well actually to independent reviews such as at <http://www.photozone.de/bindex2.html>
But there’s still the question of how to interpret Canon’s figures.
