Using Photoshop Elements color

When I chose a color for my foreground or background from the palette the boxes in the lower corner right go to gray or black. The value of the color is chosen, but not the color. How do I fix this?

Go to Image>Mode to see whether you are in RGB mode. If that’s not it maybe someone else can help.

Anne, i’m sure you’re right. It is probably in greyscale mode.
