alt key funny (not haha) windows

when i try to use the following technique to create a new layer which is the sum of all the already existing layers:
create new layer
open layer menu
choose merge visible, while holding alt key.

am unable, as soon as i hit the alt key the menu rolls up and away

related issue, in general, in PS whenever i hit the alt key, the first letter of all the menu titles become underlined

are you using trillian instant messenger or some other program that steals the alt key?

Mouse (feivel),

as soon as i hit the alt key the menu rolls up and away

Hold the ALT key and keep it held down while keeping the mouse button held down (like on a Mac) when you are stamping the layer. When you release the mouse button it will stamp the layer.
