Hello,

Is there any way to find out if a picture has been retouched ?

Let’s say people have to send in a picture of a figure but they retouched the photo. Is there any way to tell if they retouched the photo ?

Or is it impossible to tell ?

It all depends on how badly the retouch job is.

Hans,

Grant and Ken are both right. It’s theoretically possible to retouch a digital image in an undetectable way. The lower the resolution the easier it is to do. The higher the resolution the harder it is to do (you have to alter more pixels in more difficult ways). What makes the Dartmouth professor’s detection method possible is that he’s analyzing fairly high-resolution images. As retouching methods get more sophisticated they could be undetectable at low enough resolutions, per the article’s last sentence.
