open exr layers or arbitrary channels in photoshop cs3?

In photoshop cs3 help it states that OpenEXR can contain an arbitrary number of channels, and the format supports both 16‑bit and 32‑bit images.

But I am unable to save an alpha or any arbitrary channels in the .exr file format from within photoshop. Wondering if there is a workaround or if photoshop is limited to only save a flat copy without any extra channels or alphas?
