CS Batch Rename rewriting format creating unreadable files

Using Photoshop CS…in File Browser…when Batch Renaming…we have Mac OS default setting and not selecting PC or Unix. But for some reason, the process is converting the original JPEG or RAW image files into an unreadable document or Exec file. We are using Mac OS 10.4.11. Is this some setting we’ve inadvertently activated OR another cause?
