I’m a total newby when it comes to Photoshop, I must admit, so maybe this is sort of a stupid question. But how do I "fade out" a picture (increasing the transparency towards one side of the picture).

Use a Layer Mask and apply a gradient to it. Has to be on a Layer, not Background. <http://www.sitepoint.com/article/photoshop-fade-layer-mask>
