When you scan in PS (File>Import>"Scanner") each scan should come in as a separate image.
If you have scanned a group of images and want to make them into individual images you need to select each item in the scan with one of the lasso tools (rectangular?), then when selected shift+ctrl+J will cut the selection and paste it onto its own layer. Do this for all of your scans. When each scan is on it own layer, go to File>Scripts>Export Layers to Files and choose a destination, file name and type.
The grey "desktop" surrounding your image window is not the same as the ones you see in vector graphic type progs, Coreldraw, Illustrator for example. You cannot drag selections out of the image onto it, it’s just there (if still grey) to provide a neutral working background to your image, it is not a holding area.
