Checkerboard Background

I have an 11×14 color print of a woman that I am removing the background from. I have been using the magic wand and eraser and clone and the result at first was a grey background. Now, halfway through the process, after removing the background the result is that I get a checker board background. Any help would be appreciated.

A checkerboard on the background means it is transparent.
