PS CS3 Smart Sharpen very slow for LCE

PS CS3 Smart Sharpen is very slow to create a preview and then be applied to the image, at least when using a low amount and high radius, eg 20, 50, for local contrast enhancement (LCE). I’m now running Vista 64, but I think it happened even under XP 32.

Is this a common issue or is there some way of speeding things up with Smart Sharpen?
