By clicking the "Exclude Overlapping Path Areas" button, it is possible to exclude an area within a path. However, when I adjust the inside path by moving the path points, the outside path is ignored when the path is converted to a selection.

Is there a way to maintain the outside and inside paths when an adjustment to the inside path is necessary so that both paths become selections when the paths are converted?

An awkward work-around is to save each selection, which were converted from paths, individually then load the outside selection followed by the inside selection with "Subtract from Selection" selected.

You need to select both paths by shift-clicking with one of the selection tools (black or white arrow). This shift-clicking – instead of the usual Ctrl-clicking – is Illustrator behavior. You’ll get used to it.
