Hey, anyone know a way to prevent default masks on Smart Filters from showing up?

No. It’s "as designed" and consistent with other items. I know it’s annoying having to remove them, but that’s just the way it is…

If that’s the case that’s too shabby.

But I would have to disagree with you on the point it’s consistent with other items. For example, we have been able to turn off the deaful masks for adjustment layers in the past.

CS3 and prior: go to layer’s palette options and uncheck default masks for adjustment layers option.

CS4 – go to same place and uncheck "default masks for fill layers" only. Then go to the Adjustments panel and uncheck "add masks by default" for adjustment layers (a clumsy relocation of a known feature, IMHO)

I’m sure it’s a matter of time ’till Adobe takes care of smart filter masks as well
