I have worked whole day to make a very simple logo in Photoshop 5 and PS levels. After managing to make it almost as as I like, I tried using export gif 89 to make it transparent such that I could use it on different background colors. The result was an ugly transparency with white pieces visible around texts. One may think I have cutthe white background badly. Is there any tricks which I ma not aware of?

This is caused by anti-aliasing on the logo, which you do want to keep it from being jaggy. The problem is you need a "matte" color which in later versions of Photoshop is easier to do.

Try this: select a color that is close to what you think your major background color will be. Make a layer underneath the logo and fill with this color. Ctri-click on the logo in the Layers Palette to make a selection and inverse the selection (Shift-Ctrl-I) hit Delete. Now merge the the layers. Export as gif. Your white halo will now be similar to the background color of your page and give the illusion of fading into the backgound better.

If you are going to use it on a wide variety of background colors you may have to make more than one version.

You might also play with expanding the selection afterwards a few pixels to capture only the fuzzy edge and make it trasparent outside that if it’s going on top of a pattern or background image. This is after following the steps described by edjh.
