Photoshop CS is VERY slow loading plug-ins

During initialization in Photoshop 7, the "loading plug-ins" message is displayed for 10 or 15 seconds. When I load CS, it takes two or three MINUTES to finish that part of the initialization.

My plug-ins directory has about 35,000 files and is 2.3 GB (due maily to the Photo-graphic Edges plug-in), but PS 7 doesn’t have a problem so I don’t see why CS does. I’m running XP Pro on a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz system with 1.5 GB of RAM.

Anyone experiencing slower initialization times during the "loading plug-ins" stage?

There a a bunch of threads about this issue. The culprit according to one of the threads were AutoFX plug-ins. One or more users said that when they installed the AutoFX plugs in standalone mode and kept eveything out of the Photoshop folders, it launched in about 10 to 15 seconds. I happen to have 4 AutoFx plugins. I contacted AutoFX last week and asked them if they were working towards fixing it. They said no, that is the way it works, and that nobody from Adobe had contacted them, despite what one of the threads here stated. AutoFX also said their PhotoGraphics Edges plug-in was the problem because it loaded a huge amount of files during the install.

So…. I went and uninstalled every AutoFX plug-in, rebooted, launched Phosothop CS, and sat there for 2 minutes on the "Scanning for plug-ins". For me, the AutoFX plug-ins are not the issue, so I have been living with a 2 minute launch and it is very frustrating. I just have not had the time to try to figure it out.

I am wondering if it has to do with the number of drives and disc space. Perhaps the launch is scanning all the drives instead of the folders in Photoshop CS. I have 3 drives @ 250 gb each, 1 drive @ 120 GB, 1 raid config @ 70 GB, and then 3 firewire drives each @ 200 GB.

I sure hope not. I also do not use the "additiobal plug-in folder" option, so that can’t be it.

have the same problem, but with some errors messages.do i need to remove my plug-ins or what? i paid big money for them. is their a list of the plug-in makers that have fixes for this only cs problem?

Plugins definitely load slower. The more you have the more it chokes.

Another unfinished toaster sold to the public. Reminds me of Bill Gates.

I have the same problem. But I had the problem in v7 also. When the AutoFx plug-ins are not installed I get 10 or 15 second load of v7 or CS. With them installed as plugins it takes around 90 seconds to load. I have always suspected there is some sort of problem with AutoFX. Perhaps they are building a cache or something during load up. I have found in the past that AutoFx will not give you much help. So we may just be stuck. Certaining Adobe could do something about it to, if they wanted to, but I imagine they’ll just point the finger at AutoFx and we’ll all suffer. Doc

Just remove the non-plugin files from your plugins directory. (all the presets/settings/etc.)
