it’s part of the licence manager software. don’t delete it. it sux, but it’s necessary. 2 copies of it reside in memory (per the task list) when photoshop is running.
How can we stop the error message, and does it have anything to do with my next error message???
reinstall and don’t delete that file!
Send the software back and stick with V. 7. (THH).
oooh. but what about the shiny new enhancements!!! 🙂
Katherine
Two things:
1. Just wondering why it took 3 days to get it activated.
2. Perhaps you would save yourself a lot of hassle by clean reinstalling XP (maybe on a new partition if you have your drive partitioned). XP doesn’t mind reactivating on a multi-boot drive.
Hi Mike, I just reinstalled windows a couple of weeks ago, along with a reformat.
I have been on the phone with Adobe for over an hour. They are telling me it’s the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 driver and to uninstall it. I don’t think that’s the problem, because Photoshop is running perfectly on my cheap laptop with the same driver. I did check the Epson website, and I have the latest driver. I uninstalled the driver, and Photoshop still didn’t work. I reinstalled the driver, and had the same problems.

Yikes. If that were the issue (which I agree, I don’t think it is) that would be, well, a problem.
I doubt that the Epson driver is the problem too. I have the 1290(which I think is the European version of the 1280) and I’ve had no problems.
We’ve got someone looking into the issue. I don’t think it’s the Epson driver either, but something else going on. It’s just clear what yet.

Hi Scott,
Is the ~e5d141.tmp your file, or Macromedias???? I have found out that Macromedia uses that for product activation, and so do a lot of other programs. Macromedia also includes it in their licensing thing for Microsoft, and it’s in Windows 2000 and XP. There seem to be a lot of conflicts with it and many programs. I know there is something about it and some libraries it creates and deletes.
I don’t know whether that helps or not, but I didn try uninstalling my Epson driver, which didn’t help.
I also forgot to mention to tech support that I have the same Epson driver installed in my laptop, and Photoshop runs fine there.
Too bad it’s such a cheap laptop that I would never be able to edit photographs on it! 🙂
It’s a Macrovision file, which is why both the Macromedia and Photoshop use it. Hmm. I’ll have someone look into this…
-Scott
Thanks Scott, yeah, I looked at mine with "properties", and it says it’s from Macrovision Europe Ltd. original name cleanup.exe version 1.0.0.1
I thought I would provide the version number in case there are different versions with some causing problems and others not.
Thanks for responding!
Scott and John,
I wanted to update you on what happened when I tried to start Photoshop CS today. I am again getting the message that my 30 days grace period has ended. (I’m not sure whether it was working yesterday or not, because I didn’t try to start it). Anyway, I’ve used up my quota of activations, and I’ve never been able to even try Photoshop.
I haven’t changed anything on my hard drive, in fact I haven’t even installed any programs yet.
Do either of you have a list of hardware drivers and software and stuff from Macrovision that causes problems with their activation thing? That’s the only thing that I can think of, and it might be good for you guys to know as well because sooner or later someone else is going to upgrade to Photoshop CS with the same HP Pavilion that I have and the same hardware configuration.
If you do have a list, I can check it with what is on my computer and report back.
(If you guys need my serial number I can send it in an email, but Adobe has it from my calls from support. I’m not sure whether or not I’m registered, because they may have registered me when I called).
Katherine, if you have an Adobe Case# for your calls, you should list it so these guys can look you up.
dave
Hi Dave, should I post it here on the forums? I gave it to John Cornicello at Adobe in a private email. He is working on this too.

John’s da’ man. 🙂 I’m sure he’ll fill in whomever need to know.
Thanks for the heads up Dave, I’m feeling a lot better now! 🙂
John or Scott, Stephanie has been helping me here: Katherine Lawson "Why oh why can’t I activate?????" 11/21/03 5:38pm </cgi-bin/webx?13/36>
I wanted to let you know so you could see what we’ve been doing. The weird thing is after I did what she said, I actually got activated over the internet for the first time, and I had already used up all my activations. Apparently the number of times you activate must be kept in a file that the activation thing keeps erasing, and it erases that too????
If the records are at Adobe, I hope there is some way I can let them know that all of these activations are caused by problems on one machine, not because I am putting it on any other machines.
(Photoshop still isn’t working though, I’m getting the very same error messages and then it shuts down).
Actually, for the same hardware, it’s a "re-activation", and there’s no limit on re-activations. A hardware "hash" or "marker" is derived from combining information about the varioous bits and pieces in a machine. As long as the machine doesn’t change in a way that the software provided intended to catch (Photoshop CS is set up to be very liberal here), then the marker stays the same and having to re-activate the software doesn’t count against the 2-machine license limit.
Continue working with Stephanie and John to try and track down your issues, thanks!

Katherine,
I also am having the same problem you are on a completely separate type of machine. I have no Epson printers here at my office at all.
Here is my configuration:
Dell Dimension 8200
P4 2.2Ghz
1Gb RDRAM
NVidia GeForce2 MX
Windows XP Pro
When I first installed the product, it asked me to activate, which I did and it worked? correctly… After that, I have tried to start and get the same error message you do.
I also have tried re-installing about 3 times with no luck.
Just so Scott, Stephanie and John can see my config (if there’s some similarity they can trace this problem to).
Thanks.
Just got home to install on my home machine. Installed and activated fine and runs fine, as well.
Home config:
Self-built PC
ASUS P4PE Motherboard
P4 2.4Ghz
512Mb DDR
ATI Radeon Pro 9500
Windows XP Pro
The key to the e5d141.tmp is other installed software, especially Macromedia products.
If you are having the same problem, please read the existing thread, then answer the questions asked.
Chris,
Thanks for the reply! I have read this thread, but don’t see any "questions" to answer except for the part about other products causing problems.
There seems to be no listing of possible culprit applications, however… 🙁
I really wanted to let everyone know that someone else with a completely different hardware setup is having the same problem. If there happens to be a common piece of hardware, it might be driver related.
Also, if anyone needs it, I can get a list of my installed applications so Adobe can compare with Katherine’s.
Thanks!
Orion – again, the key seems to be Macromedia applications.
But yes, a list of installed software would help.
orion,
Reboot your XP system and delete all ~e***.tmp files from c:\documents and settings\your username\local settings\temp.
Let us know if this clears up the errors you’re seeing on launch.

Thanks Chris and Stephanie. I will try the rebooting tomorrow (I believe I’ve tried this already, but I will try again to make sure).
If that doesn’t work, I will get a list of installed applications together for you.
Thanks!
Hi Orionizer, Thankyou for posting too. I think if we can find something in common that may be causeing the problem, it will be much easier for Adobe to solve.
One thing I do notice in common with Orionizer is that we both have NVIDIA cards on the machines we are having problems with. I will look to see whaich Macromedia programs I have installed too. Right now I think the only thing I have on my machine is the Flash plugin though.
Kathi
Well, I’ve finally got it working…
I went ahead and uninstalled all extraneous applications, rebooted, ensured the temp folder was empty and everything is working now…
Unfortunately, I don’t know what application might have been causing the problem, but Katherine, write me an email (rsmith at triad.rr.com) (replace the at with the @ sign and no spaces) and I will be glad to provide you with a list of applications and (if I can remember them all) what I uninstalled.
Thanks!
