not sure what you mean? please explain. do you mean Edit> Prefrences> File Handling> File Saving Options> Image Previews? (options are always save, never save and ask when saving)?

no, in windows explorer psd files no longer show as thumbnail images, like they did prior to my CS installation the manual specifically says that this was removed as they want you to use the file browser, but thier is very incovientent as i can no longer organize psd files without starting up PS to view them.

I’m having the exact same problem. Everything worked fine until I deleted PS7. Then the thumbnails turned into being the PS8 logo.

I know there is a simple solution to the problem because I’ve had it with other programs before but can’t remember what to do.

Anyone have a solution?

Everything worked fine until I deleted PS7.

They removed the psicon.dll from ps8 as it was causing conflicts. It was there in version 7, and I’ve never had any problems w/it, but many people experienced not able to save file errors when in photoshop beacuse of it. If you want it, you need to copy that dll back, register it and assign the proper registry keys. If you can leave 7 installed, that might be a better way. If not, there’s a thread here with some registry workarounds, but they’re pretty complex (and you’ll still need to get the dll from the ps7 installation and register it).

PS filebrowser may be way better than last version and help enormously within PS, but it is no substitute for Windows Explorer for file management, especially when it comes to sorting and organizing hundreds of images.
One of the best things about upgrading from Win98SE to Win2K/XP was the ease of image file sorting due the Thumbnail view.
The Bug that this has cured was less of a problem. On the odd occasion you couldn’t save because of the psicon.dll problem you used a slightly diff name and then deleted the older file afterwards.
If the File browser could be used outside PS and with multiple windows then it could be forgiven, nearly. Needs speeding up too, large files open more slowly, not a problem with thumbnails as all images are basically equal.
Messing with the fundaments of how an OS works is a really bad programing. Always been impressed with PS until now. A CS/8.1 fix may be necessary to tempt me to upgrade. Just experimented on a work machine where we installed PS7 after CS and thumbnails reappeared. Then a right click on a psd(or other file) to reassign the open with option and PS CS/8.0 opens the file rather than PS7. Just have to wait and see if the conflict occurs now.

psicon has nothing to do with thumbnail view. that’s purely a windows function and can still be used without the dll. psicon.dll only affect "Large Icon" view.

If it’s that much of a problem (when in large icon view in explorer), and the dll doesn’t cause problems on your (any) particular system, reinstall ps7 then delete everything in the directory except psicon.dll.

If you go this route, reinstall PSCS after the PS7 installation to maintain the correct file associations.

Update
The lack of thumbnails was driving me mad so I installed PS7 again and assigned it to display the thumbnails.
This meant I could see thumbs but the files still opened with CS. Then the wretched bug, caused by the thumbs, regarding saving/deleting cropped up again and it was even worse than b4.
So I binned PS7.
Now the really odd thing is that I still have thumbs for PS files. I’m pretty sure it happened a few days later – not immediately – but no idea why, as I didn’t twig at first as I’m so used to them being there and therefore forgot they weren’t meant to be there.
If I knew how this occurred I’d pass it on, but computers..logic..?!?

Troyhark,

To see thumbnails in Explorer, Save, Save as, and Place windows PSICON.DLL must be there.

You should make sure you have the folder option Cache thumbails turned on. This will prevent PSICON.DLL from being call so often and hence it won’t crash as often.
