Hi gang,
I am suddenly haveing trouble with my layer masks.

I have two locations where I do retouching/artwork/composites on the portrait work I do. at My studio location I can work with layer masks with everything working properly. However at My home station I cannot get the layer masks to do their job.

Say I am creating a multi-layered composite with images shot in high-key and I am layering them over a white background. Usually I will use the layer mask to blend out the edges of the layers, as well as eliminating any overlapping areas of the images. However, now the layer mask will not COMPLETLY eliminate the area that I am trying to hide.
It leaves about a 10% ghost of the area I am trying to eliminate. At the studio, it eliminates the areas completly using the same techinque. I am assuming I have some function set wrong, but I cannot figure it out…
PLese help!!!

Maybe the brush you are using to mask with is not set to 100% opacity, or maybe the brush is in a blending mode other than normal.

mike,
brush is set at 100% and in normal mode. the trouble occurs in both the gradient tool and the brush. That is why this is so perplexing… all functions are look like it should be able to completly eliminate the image but it will only eliminate 90% of it and leavig a ghost of the image taht has to be erased rather then layer masked.
HELP 🙂

Maybe a reset of prefs [FAQ} would be worth trying.
