Consistent head size cropping for publications & Yearbooks

Does anyone know if there is a way to add an elipse or head size marker into a crop selection? I sometimes have to use individual head shots of people that are cropped differently in a publication. It would be great if there were a way to add a head size guide in a crop. That way if I have to crop an image to 640×800 pixels all I have to do is center the head into the mask and the rest of the image will crop correctly.

This is similar to the mask that a photographer has inside his camera to give him consistent head sizes for yearbook pictures.

Perhaps I misunderstood your question and if I did, I apologize. But you can do what you want with the crop tool and/or the selection tool. With the crop tool. for example, there are settings at the top of the screen where you can set the width, height, and resolution. When you enter the dimensions, in this case (480 px for the width and 689 px for the height and a resolution of 300, the crop tool will scale itself to those dimensions. You can make the selection bigger or smaller by holding down the mouse button. Crop it the way you want and then press Enter.

With the selection tool, you can use a Fixed Aspect Ratio from the drop down menu and enter the 640 px and 480 px but you cannot adjust the resolution. Then you select Image – Crop.

The first method is easier, I think. This works with CS and 7.0 (not sure about older versions). The only drawback to either method is that the selection is rectangular. The ellipse selection tool does not permit you to enter dimensions (there are no sides on an ellipse or circle).

Also, You could make a mask with an oval shape but it would not automatically resize. You would probably have to use Transform (CTRL-T) to resize the image so the head would fit the mask oval.

I hope this is what you were asking. Rest assured, there are many here who are much more knowledgeable than I who will probably offer better suggestions (maybe an action?).

Yes it does. It uses the outside dimensions. Those same outside dimensions are used if you use the elliptical marquee to crop.

Just use the Rectangular or Elliptical Marquee set to a fixed size of 640×480 (per your example), Hold down the alt key, click to the center of the head or object you want to be in the horizontal and vertical center of your crop. Drag the selection as necessary, The cross-hairs should be the exact center (don’t let go of the alt key until the mouse button is released).

They don’t show as complete, clicable or cut/pastable URL’s in a newsreader.

As an experiment I tried cutting the cgi-bin/webx?14/8 portion out and adding it to http://www.adobeforums.com/ in a browser to complete the URL.

This works.

But unfortunately they are not complete; you need to manually add adobeforums.com in front of them to get it to work properly.

This is only if you view the forums via a real newsreader; clicking on the links in the web forum works just fine.
