Please help! RAW file problem…..

It’s a Canon raw variant and maybe you need a Canon util to best convert it. Otherwise I’d make sure you have the latest version of Potatoshops raw plugin…?

There are multiple meanings for "RAW". The file your Photoshop is expecting should be just pixel data with no headers… that’s why it is asking you to provide information about the width, height and pixel storage. Most likely, your file is *not* one of these "RAW" files, but is instead a camera manufacturer specific format which you must decode with utilities from those manufacturers.

This is from a Canon dSLR and is probably an 8 Mpixel file from either the 1D Mark II or the 20D (I have the Mark II and that’s the suffix for its raw files). You shouldn’t rename it, it’s not in the same format as the Adobe RAW format but instead it’s the actual sensor capture from the digital camera and needs to be opened via a RAW converter.

When I try to open in PhotoShop 7, it says that the "specified image is larger than file".

You cannot open this file in Photoshop 7 for raw conversion … there was a raw plugin for PS 7 but it hasn’t been updated for a long time and won’t open the ..cr2 files.

Please HELP!!!

If you have access to Photoshop CS then you can open it with that by double-clicking in the File Browser. I think you need the rev 2.2 or 2.3 plug-in for this file, I’m pretty sure the original plug-in won’t open it since it came out prior to release of either the Mark II last spring or the 20D in September.

If the file is from the Mark II you can download for free the Phase One Capture One program demo and open it using that converter but if it’s for the 20D then I don’t think the current C1 program for a PC opens it, just the Mac version. The version supporting the 20D is supposed to be available "soon", like "any day now".

You might also be able to download for free the latest Canon software for raw conversion and convert with that.

If you know someone with CS or the Canon raw converter or Capture One just ask them to open it and save as a tiff and send that to you … this might be the easiest way.

And upgrade to PhotoshopCS. Or another camera RAW converter.

Sorry – Photoshop 7 cannot handle this file.

Yes, .CR2 is also the suffix for 20D RAW files. You’ll need to update the plugin for CS – or your friend’s CS- in order to read it in. (Camera Raw v. 2.3)

I’d be happy to convert it for you if you can get it to me, or upload it to the free ftp server, name and addy elude me at the moment, and you tell me when you’d like to send; I’ll open a window to let it in….

File is converted and on its way to you, but as a HQ jpeg. Neither the 16 bit TIFF nor PS file would go out the door.

However, the shot appears to me to have some lighting difficulties, in that the tube on top of the box is much more exposed than the box on which it rests. – actually, it’s the box that’s perhaps underexposed.

IAE, the temp was really cool, and there was a color cast in the white. I set the white point using the tube, and the cast appears gone. Looks like it was shot on denim! I moved the exposure up a half a stop in the RAW mode.

Do get back to me about reconverting if I have made some assumptions that go counter to the intent of the shot, and in the mean time, one of us can find the service that allows for free large transfers, so I can get you the full 16 bit TIFF if you need it.
