In Paint Shop Pro, when you’ve modified an image, an asterisk (*) appears next to the image’s name in the image window’s title bar. When you save the image, the asterisk goes away.

I’m learning Photoshop 7, and I don’t see any visual indication that an image has been modified. Does such an indicator exist?

Thanks!

I think you can only tell by your History states. I know what you’re talking about, though. Dreamweaver has the same asterisk that disappears once the file is saved. Of course, if the file has been modified and you try to close it, Photoshop will ask if you want to save it. It doesn’t do this with unmodified files.

If you have my Critique Plug-in and try to save a good picture, you get the warning. If it’s crap, it says "Save to Trash?"

Good one! How about a little animation where you have the option of shooting a 3-pointer for the "round file?"

There is a hidden hint. File -> Save is disabled as long as an image has not been modified.

Now, if you wish to determine if a file that you have JUST opened has ever been modified, I don’t think PS has such an indicator. However, other programs, such as ThumbsPlus will show a tiny icon on the thumbnail, that indicates that the image has been modified some time in the past. I assume that this is what PSP shows with the *, but am not sure, as I have never used that program. ThumbsPlus will also show what program was used to modify the file, though it does not have a "history" state to indicate what modification (s) was done.

PS/CS has a feature that can track changes, but of course only if you use CS. You can have CS put the change history in the file’s metadata, or an external log file.

And for the very productive, there is Adove Version Cue which comes with CS and works for all CS suite programs. Cue has been very helpful in my shop.

If File > Save is grayed out then it’s unmodified. If the History palette is empty then either you purged the History palette or haven’t made any history-worthy changes. File > Save is probably the best indicator.

If you use the Mac OS X version of Photosop, yes. A dot appears in the window’s Close button.

If you use the PC version of Photoshop, no.
