What versions of photoshop work on windows 98? If its an older version, where is the best place to buy it?

My pc is 1.8 ghz with 256 ram and a 40 gig hard drive. Can this system use photoshop and not be really really slow?

I know for sure that 6.01 worked OK
You could do with much more RAM (cheap)
A second hard drive (on the other channel) would be a good idea because PS could use it for swapping and because keeping anything valuable on the same drive than Windows 98 is a sure way to lose it. Win 98 crashes often and crashes hard.
Sorry , no idea where to buy an older version. Maybe Amazon?

I use PS 7.0.1 on a Win98SE PC with 256MB ram. The program takes a while to load but is not unduly slow operating on even large image files. You can use PS7 for sure.

Actually your computer is fast enough, but you should upgrade ram to 512 at least. The hard drive is still a little small unless you are different from most of us and do not have much else installed. Not really sure if 7 and 8 will work with Win98, but I ran PS6 with no problems. As long as you are going to purchase PS new it might just pay to spend a few dollar more for ram, additional 80 gig hard drive (find on sale and dirt cheap, and upgrade to XP if possible and then you could get the latest version for what it would cost for ver 6.

The earlier you go the faster it will run. I would not use PS 7 it is power hungry. I run 6 on my laptop 166 and it is OK but slow. I suspect that 4 would be faster but I haven’t tried it.
